The GCTF Capacity-Building in the East Africa Region Working Group (EAWG) Co-Chairs, Egypt and the European Union (EU), convened the Third Plenary Meeting in a virtual format on 25 November 2020.
The purpose of this meeting was to discuss regional perspectives on counterterrorism (CT) developments, challenges and responses in East Africa, including the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on the region. It further provided countries and organizations active in the region with an opportunity to report on national counterterrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism policies and programs, priorities, progress and issues of concern or need.
Following the Plenary Meeting, the Working Group will start implementing its activities, including on its six priority areas of work, namely: (1) CT legislation and related training; (2) national and regional P/CVE conducive to terrorism action plans; (3) countering terrorist financing; (4) strategic communications; (5) interfaith dialogue; and (6) the nexus between organized crime and terrorism.
